The Call of the Camino

Image
Camino del Sureste Well a lot has happened since the last Camino four years ago. I have retired, run a few half marathons, moved to the countryside in the province of Alicante, Spain, learned how to cultivate our olive trees, make olive oil from our own olives and begun to learn a little Spanish. Having seen a number of Camino signs locally in Aspe, and visited Pilar de la Horadada which is the starting point of the Rana del Sureste and looked at the map of Camino routes across Spain which sits on the wall above my desk... ...and knowing Sam - a friend on mine-  who has also walked a Camino (Ourense to Santiago), was coming to visit... you can probably work out what's coming next... ...as you will know if you have made a Camino to Santiago it reels you back in to come once more, to learn a little more, to see rather than to glimpse, to appreciate rather than take for granted, to be a little closer to God And so it was that on Thursday 18th June we began outside the Basilica d...

Ages to Burgos Part 1

Image
Today the starting temperature was -7 degrees... The first few km took the Camino through Atapeurca, an important archaeological area. (Google it) .with a rocky climb up to the Cruz de Matagrande, pictured. The Way was stony and through beautiful olive groves, a sort of biblical prelude to the cross that followed. Cue verse of the "The old rugged cross". A much needed cafe con leche stop at a small cafe in Cardenuela Riopico. The temperature had risen a bit, but it still took my fingers 15 minutes to thaw out. Best have another coffee then. So now I am wearing socks on my hands too! Camino led gently downhill via the edge of the Burgos Aeropuerto to Castanares. Thence via another amazing "Parque Fluvial". The cold winter air, frost that had frozen parts of small waterfalls and 6.5 km of lovely walking by myself. Aching feet meant I was glad to find the Albergue Municipal next to the Cathedral.

Pilgrim's progress

Image
It is pretty much true that it is almost impossible to get lost on the Camino Frances. There are signposts, yellow arrows and various other hints. There are shells in the pavement, shells on the lamp posts and km marker posts about every 0.5 km here in Galicia. Two slightly different signs made an appearance today... The mosaic in the pavement and the Pilgrims may cross the road traffic light... Tomorrow the serious walking begins once more. This time I shall have a Peregrina to travel with and to train in the "arts". Will I still be recognisable? How will I respond to not walking on my own?  Keep reading the blog to find out!
